In building insulation materials, if extruded boards (XPS boards) use secondary recycled materials (such as recycled plastics, waste recycled materials) as raw materials, it may cause the following serious consequences:
1.Reduced thermal insulation performance
Impurities in the recycled materials (such as other plastics and metal particles) will destroy the closed-cell structure of the extruded
board, resulting in an increase in the thermal conductivity (input value) and a significant decrease in the thermal insulation effect.
The water absorption rate increases, and it is easy to get wet and freeze, further weakening the thermal insulation performance.
2.Insufficient compressive strength
The molecular chain of the recycled material breaks and ages, resulting in a decrease in the compressive strength of the board, which cannot meet the national standard (such as the compressive strength of the XPS board needs to be ≥150-500 kPa).
When used on the ground or roof, it is easy to deform and collapse, causing hidden dangers in the building structure.
3.Poor dimensional stability
The recycled material has a complex composition, an unstable thermal expansion coefficient, and is easy to shrink or warp, causing the insulation layer to crack and fall off.
4.Release of harmful substances
Recycled materials may contain flame retardants (such as hexabromocyclododecane), plasticizers (such as phthalates) and other harmful chemicals. Long-term release will pollute indoor air and endanger human health.
If the source of recycled materials is unknown (such as medical waste, electronic waste), they may carry heavy metals (lead, cadmium) or radioactive substances.
5.Increased fire risk
Impurities in recycled materials may cause flame retardants to fail, reduce the fireproof level of the board (such as from B1 to B2), and easily burn and release toxic smoke in the event of a fire.
6.Environmental pollution
The processing of recycled materials may produce more waste gas, wastewater and dust pollution. If not handled properly, it will cause secondary pollution to the surrounding environment.

How Tile Backer Board Solves Old House Problems Such As Wall Cracking and Moisture Issues?
August 07, 2025
In old house renovations, problems like wall cracking and moisture-induced mold often trouble homeowners. However, Tile Backer Boards, with their unique properties, have become the "invisible heroes" in solving these persistent issues.
Do you know the R-value of extruded polystyrene (XPS)?
September 05, 2025
R-value is a measure of insulation performance. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation, effectively preventing heat from penetrating.
What is XPS board insulation and why it is popular?
August 01, 2025
Expanded polystyrene is popularly known as XPS and it is used for insulation purposes, both in residential and industrial settings.
