R-value is a measure of insulation performance. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation, effectively preventing heat from penetrating. Therefore, when used in building envelopes, materials with higher R-values keep
heat out of the building in the summer and in during colder months.
R-values are cumulative. This means that the thicker the material, the higher the R-value. In theory, a two-inch-thick insulation board has twice the R-value of a one-inch-thick board of the same material. Contractors can alsoadd two layers of insulation to achieve a higher R-value. The advantage of using multiple layers of insulation is that it allows builders to stagger the seams, reducing thermal bridging and heat loss at the edges of the panels.
Factors Affecting R-Value
Thickness: The R-value is directly proportional to the thickness of the insulation material. The thicker the insulation, the higher the R-value and the better the insulation.
Density: The higher the density of extruded board, the higher the R-value and the better the insulation performance.
Thermal Conductivity: The lower the thermal conductivity of a material, the higher its R-value and the better its insulation performance.
