Tile backer boards serve as a waterproof base for tile installation in wet areas. They effectively prevent water from seeping into the surfaces beneath them, enabling you to create a fully waterproof setup that keeps wet rooms clean and dry effortlessly. Installing tile backer boards is very straightforward, and there are multiple installation methods available, making them suitable for a range of different applications.
How to Install Tile Backer Boards on Timber Stud Walls?
For timber stud walls, if the studs are spaced 300mm apart, you can use 10mm or 12mm thick tile backer boards; if the studs are spaced 600mm apart, 20mm thick tile backer boards are required. Please note that all edges of the boards must be supported.
During installation, the tile backer boards can be fixed to the studs using appropriate stainless steel screws and washers, with the maximum spacing between fixings not exceeding 300mm.
How to Install Tile Backer Boards on Solid Walls?
Option 1: Screw Fixing
Measure the tile backer boards and cut them to the required size using a sharp knife or saw. For solid walls, wall plugs, screws, and washers can be used to fix the tile backer boards, with the spacing between fixings kept at 300mm.
Option 2: Tile Adhesive
Use a 5 to 8mm trowel to comb flexible tile adhesive over the entire surface of the tile backer board.
Stagger the tile backer boards in a brickwork pattern and press them firmly against the wall.
Option 3: Drywall Installation
Apply drywall foam onto the tile backer board—first along the edges, then in spots spaced roughly 300mm apart. For simpler fitting, lay the board flat with one end touching the wall.
Secure the tile backer board to the studs using screws and washers. The fixings should be no more than 300mm apart. Let the foam set for 4 to 5 minutes, then gently pry the board into place. Press hard over the entire surface, beginning from the top. Make sure the top edge and all sides get just as much pressure as the rest of the board.
Preparing Tile Backer Boards for Tiles or Plaster Tiling
All seams must be taped with Joint Scrim Tape, except in moisture-prone zones where Butyl Tape is recommended. At this point, tiling work on the wall can commence.
For plastering: Prior to applying the tape, seal the edges of the Tile Backer Board with Adhesive/Sealant. After this step, plaster can be applied.
Floor Fixing: Tile Adhesive
Apply a coat of flexible tile adhesive to the base floor using a 5-8mm trowel. Position the Tile Backer Board onto the adhesive and press it down firmly.
Floor Fixing: Screws & Washers into Timber
First, take measurements of the tile backer boards and trim them to the required dimensions with a sharp knife or saw. Position the panel where you want it, then secure the boards to the wooden subfloor using screws and washers, placing a fastener every 300mm.
For additional waterproofing needs, seal the joints with adhesive/sealant. In extremely damp areas, however, butyl tape is a better alternative.
